TINUBU, LAWMAKERS UNDER FIRE FOR SILENCE ON BUDGET REPORTS – ONYEKPERE
Public finance management analyst, Eze Onyekpere, has called on President Bola Tinubu to provide Nigerians with a clear account of the national budgets and their execution.
Onyekpere made the appeal on Thursday during an interview with Arise Television, adding that the National Assembly must also explain why it has neglected its oversight responsibilities.
“As far as I’m concerned, Mr. President should explain to Nigerians what is happening with our budgets and their execution. If he cannot do this personally, he should authorize the Minister of Finance to provide the explanation,” Onyekpere said.
He criticized lawmakers for failing to report on budget implementation, noting that quarterly reports from the budget office were never made public.
“They didn’t provide any information at the end of the first, second, third, or fourth quarters. And now they are already considering the 2026 budget and expect to be taken seriously. Recall that in August, Mr. President stated that the revenue target for December had been surpassed, specifically in non-oil revenue,” he added.
Onyekpere suggested that resolving the current budget issues for 2025 should primarily involve the President and the Minister of Finance, rather than involving the Accountant-General of the Federation, who merely executes instructions.
