President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially announced the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Saturday after a prolonged illness.

A statement from the Presidency confirmed that Buhari died at approximately 4:30 p.m. while undergoing medical treatment in the United Kingdom.

Following the news, President Tinubu spoke with the former First Lady, Aishat Buhari, to express his heartfelt condolences. He has also directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the UK to accompany Buhari’s remains back to Nigeria.

The statement reads:
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died today in London at about 4:30 p.m. after a long illness.

“President Tinubu has conveyed his condolences to Mrs. Aishat Buhari and instructed Vice President Kashim Shettima to head to the UK to accompany the body back home.

“Buhari served as Nigeria’s elected president in 2015 and 2023, and earlier as military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985.”

As a mark of national mourning, President Tinubu has ordered that flags be flown at half-mast in honor of the late leader.
