President Bola Tinubu has extended heartfelt condolences to the families of victims, as well as the management and staff of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the United Bank for Africa (UBA), following Tuesday’s fire outbreak at the Afriland Building on Broad Street, Lagos Island.

At least seven people have been confirmed dead as a result of the incident, with the victims reportedly passing away in hospitals across the state after being rescued from the high-rise building.

Among the deceased were four staff members of FIRS, which operates from the sixth and seventh floors of the Towers.

In a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President also commiserated with Afriland Properties Limited, FIRS, and UBA over the tragic loss of lives.

Tinubu expressed sympathy to those who sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment in hospitals.

The statement read in part:
“President Tinubu extends his condolences to the management and staff of Afriland Properties Limited, the FIRS, UBA, and particularly those who lost loved ones in the inferno, as well as the injured who are receiving medical attention.

“The President commends the emergency responders, including the Federal Fire Service, first aiders, medical personnel, and members of the public, for their swift intervention and their sense of responsibility during the evacuation.

“He also urges increased caution, training, and alertness to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

“The President prays for the repose of the souls of the departed and wishes the injured a speedy recovery.”

Doctors are still working to save the lives of other victims receiving treatment.

The incident was one of two separate fire outbreaks that occurred in the Lagos Island Business District on Tuesday, which also left several people injured and destroyed goods worth millions of naira.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
