TINUBU REWARDS SUPER FALCONS, D’TIGRESS WITH CASH, HONOURS AND HOMES — PUBLIC REACTS
It has been a week of celebration — and controversy — for Nigeria’s top women’s sports teams.
President Bola Tinubu has rewarded the Super Falcons and D’Tigress with generous packages, including cash prizes, national honours, and housing units.
Days earlier, D’Tigress made history by winning their fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship title. In recognition of their feat, Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Tinubu at a State House ceremony, conferred each player and technical crew member with the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) award.
The president also approved $100,000 for every player and $50,000 for the coach and technical staff. Each awardee will also receive one housing unit. A similar reward package was given to the Super Falcons just a week before.
However, the grand gestures have sparked debate among Nigerians. While some applaud the recognition of the athletes’ hard work and global achievements, others question the timing and size of the rewards given the country’s current economic struggles.
Sports analyst Calvin Emeka, CEO of ACL Sports, believes the discussion should be balanced, noting that honouring sports excellence also inspires the next generation.
Whether celebrated or criticised, the rewards have once again put women’s sports in Nigeria in the spotlight.
