Tinubu Unveils Child Protection Plans On 2025 Children’s Day
Abuja, Nigeria – May 27, 2025
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Tuesday, unveiled comprehensive measures aimed at safeguarding Nigerian children from bullying, violence, and neglect, while also reaffirming his administration’s commitment to ending child hunger across the nation.
As part of the initiatives, the President launched a nationwide campaign titled “See Something, Say Something, Do Something,” aimed at encouraging citizens to take an active role in safeguarding children across the country.
In his address, Tinubu expressed pride in the nation’s youth, describing them as the future leaders and innovators of Nigeria. He stated that the government remains dedicated to ensuring that every child grows up in a safe, supportive environment.
This year’s Children’s Day theme, “Stand Up, Speak Up: Building a Bullying-Free Generation,” was described by the President as timely and reflective of the cultural values his administration seeks to promote. He pointed out that studies have shown that up to 65 percent of school-age children in Nigeria have experienced some form of bullying, which he called unacceptable. He emphasized that fear and violence hinder a child’s ability to learn and develop properly.
To address this, the government is implementing the National Plan of Action on Ending Violence Against Children (2024–2030), which lays out strategies for prevention, punishment of perpetrators, and support for victims. The plan includes provisions for adequate funding and collaboration across multiple sectors.
The administration has also introduced a National Policy on Safety, Security, and Violence-Free Schools, as well as detailed guidelines for school administrators. These efforts include incorporating social-emotional learning and child protection into teacher training programs.
On the issue of child hunger, President Tinubu reaffirmed the government’s pledge that no Nigerian child will go hungry. He mentioned the Nutrition 774 Initiative and the National School Feeding Scheme as key programs designed to improve children's health and academic performance. These efforts aim to ensure that every child receives the nutrition needed to grow and succeed.
To strengthen policy coordination on nutrition, the Federal Ministry of Women’s Affairs has established a new Department of Nutrition focused on child and maternal health.
The President also noted efforts by the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children, which is working to provide inclusive education for all children, regardless of their background.
In closing, Tinubu called on all Nigerians to take responsibility for protecting the nation’s children, stressing that ensuring their safety is not solely the responsibility of the government but of the entire society. He reminded children across the country that their dreams and voices matter and encouraged them to speak out if they are being mistreated.
