TINUBU’S INFLUENCE GROWS AS GOVERNOR ENO JOINS HIS CAMP—MORE STATES MAY FOLLOW

President Bola Tinubu’s political influence gained further momentum on Friday with the defection of Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, to the All Progressives Congress (APC), solidifying the party’s expanding control. Eno’s move, which follows the recent switch by Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, increases the number of APC-led states to 23.

This shift leaves the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with control of just 10 states and reflects a broader realignment among the nation's political leadership. Speculation continues to swirl around the potential defection of other governors such as Ahmadu Fintiri, Peter Mbah, Caleb Mutfwang, and the currently suspended Siminalayi Fubara, as the PDP grapples with internal challenges.

Fintiri’s recent meeting with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s visit to his one-time rival Aishatu Binani, have further fueled rumors. In Enugu, the PDP’s defense of Governor Mbah mirrors its earlier stance in Delta State prior to Oborevwori’s departure.

Speaking at the APC national summit, President Tinubu embraced the wave of defections as part of democratic practice. “I’m pleased with the progress we’ve made and expect more to come. This is how democracy works,” he said.

Governor Eno’s official declaration—broadcast live and attended by key APC leaders including the wife of Senate President Godswill Akpabio and nine other governors—underscored the party’s growing allure. Eno emphasized that his defection was a decision made from “a position of strength, not weakness.”

Not everyone welcomed the move. Commissioner for Information, Ini Ememobong, resigned in protest, citing political convictions. Nonetheless, Eno called for unity, urging supporters to remain loyal and focused on collective development.

In a goodwill message delivered by his wife, Senator Akpabio urged Eno to stay resolute amid criticism. Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma also praised President Tinubu’s leadership during the event. Eno later completed his APC registration at his local ward.

The APC’s National Working Committee hailed the governor’s defection as a major boost for the party and Akwa Ibom State. The PDP, on the other hand, has yet to issue an official response, indicating it will comment after further consultations.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
