Nigeria’s sprint queen and world record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, has pulled out of this year’s Diamond League final in Zurich.

Amusan, who qualified as the second-best athlete in her discipline this season with 27 points, will now be replaced by the Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton.

The final lineup will feature some of the sport’s finest, including reigning world champion Danielle Williams, fellow Jamaican Ackera Nugent, Dutch star Nadine Visser, Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji and Selina von Jackowski, as well as Americans Tonea Marshall, Grace Stark, and Kendra Harrison.

Amusan holds the meet record in Zurich with a time of 12.29s, which she clocked in 2022 on her way to winning her second Diamond League title. The 28-year-old has also enjoyed dominance in recent years, securing three straight titles between 2021 and 2023.

Her withdrawal is believed to be part of preparations to regain full form ahead of the World Championships in Tokyo next month. In her last outing at the Lausanne Diamond League, Amusan stumbled over the first hurdle and finished fifth with a time of 12.82s.

Meanwhile, Nigeria will still have strong representation in Zurich. Ezekiel Nathaniel, the African record holder in the men’s 400m hurdles, is set to compete after notching his first professional win in Lausanne last week with a time of 48.08s. Rising sprint star Udodi Onwuzurike, who made his Diamond League debut recently, is also listed for the men’s 200m final.

Despite Amusan’s absence, all eyes will be on Team Nigeria’s athletes as they continue to shine on the global stage.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
