TOMATO PRICES MAY DROP FROM AUGUST AS WET-SEASON HARVEST BEGINS — KADUNA FARMERS

Tomato prices across major markets in Nigeria are expected to decline significantly from August as farmers in Kaduna State commence the wet-season harvest, according to local cultivators.

Farmers in key producing areas such as Ikara, Giwa, and Zaria Local Government Areas have reported healthy crop growth due to favourable rainfall patterns this year. Many expressed optimism that increased supply from the new harvest would ease the current high prices triggered by the dry-season shortfall.

A farmer in Giwa, Mr. Sani Yusuf, said, “We expect a bountiful harvest. Prices should start coming down from mid-August as more tomatoes flood the markets.” Similar sentiments were shared by traders who have been struggling with low supply and rising transportation costs in recent months.

Market analysts, however, cautioned that persistent challenges such as middlemen exploitation, poor road networks, and post-harvest losses could limit the full benefits of increased production to consumers. They called for better storage facilities and improved market linkages.

The anticipated price reduction is expected to provide relief to households and food vendors who rely heavily on tomatoes as a staple ingredient. Kaduna State remains one of Nigeria’s major tomato-producing regions, contributing substantially to national supply.
