TOP ISWAP LEADERS, 76 FOOT SOLDIERS SURRENDER IN NORTH-EAST
Several senior commanders of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), alongside 76 foot soldiers, have reportedly surrendered to security forces in Nigeria’s North-East, marking a significant development in ongoing counter-insurgency operations.
According to military sources, the surrender followed sustained offensives and intensified operations targeting insurgent strongholds across the region.
Authorities said those who surrendered laid down their arms and presented themselves to troops operating under the military’s counter-terrorism campaign.
The military noted that the development reflects continued pressure on insurgent groups through coordinated land and air operations aimed at dismantling terrorist networks.
Security officials stated that the surrendered individuals will undergo screening and profiling in line with established procedures before any further action is taken.
Military authorities also reaffirmed their commitment to protecting civilians and sustaining operations against insurgent groups that continue to threaten peace and stability in the North-East.
Security analysts described the surrender as a positive development but stressed that sustained military operations and community-based stabilization efforts remain essential to achieving lasting peace.
They also emphasized the importance of rehabilitation and reintegration programmes for eligible individuals who renounce violence, in accordance with national policies.
Residents in affected communities have welcomed the development while expressing hope that it will contribute to improved security and the safe return of displaced persons.
The military reiterated that operations against remaining insurgents will continue until terrorist activities are effectively brought to an end.
