TOP-SELLING CARS IN NIGERIA (2024): WHAT NIGERIANS ARE DRIVING AND WHY

The Nigerian auto market saw a major shift in 2024 — not just in car prices, but in buyer preferences and behavior.

After a turbulent 2023 marked by foreign exchange instability and stricter import policies, Nigerian car buyers adjusted their priorities. Gone (for now) are the days when brand prestige and flashy badges ruled the roads. In their place? A new era of practicality, fuel efficiency, and long-term value.

According to the latest National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) report, the total value of imported passenger cars in 2024 fell by 14.3%, dropping from ₦1.47 trillion in 2023 to ₦1.26 trillion. This dip comes after a massive surge the previous year, where vehicle imports had more than doubled.

But beyond the numbers lies a clear trend: Nigerians are becoming smarter buyers.

🛻 So, what cars topped the charts in 2024?

While exact model-by-model rankings vary, here are some of the top performers and why they dominated:

🚗 Toyota Corolla

Still a crowd favorite, especially among middle-income buyers. It’s fuel-efficient, affordable to maintain, and has a strong resale value — key factors that appealed to budget-conscious Nigerians in 2024.

🚙 Toyota Camry (a.k.a. “Muscle”)

Popular among corporate buyers and upper-middle-class drivers, the Camry remains a top pick for its comfort, reliability, and ease of repair.

🚗 Lexus RX350

For wealthier Nigerians, this SUV offered a mix of class and practicality. Its durability and luxury feel kept it in high demand despite rising costs.

🚗 Honda Accord (“Discussion Continued”)

The 2009–2012 models remained hot in the used car market. Their sleek design and engine performance made them a top choice for younger professionals.

🚙 Toyota Hilux

Utility vehicles like the Hilux continued to do well, especially with businesses and government agencies. Its ruggedness, durability, and fuel economy made it a smart investment.

🚗 Kia and Hyundai Sedans (Rio, Elantra)

These Korean brands gained more ground in 2024, especially in the budget segment. Lower initial prices and decent fuel economy helped them appeal to a new group of buyers.

💡 What’s Driving the Shift?

Affordability: With the naira fluctuating and inflation high, Nigerians prioritized cars they could maintain without breaking the bank.

Fuel Prices: With petrol prices up, fuel efficiency became a top selling point.

Value Retention: More buyers, even wealthy ones, began thinking long-term — choosing vehicles that hold value over time.

2024 proved that Nigerian buyers are becoming more value-driven, strategic, and informed. Car brands that want to stay relevant in the market must adapt to this new mindset.

So, whether you're looking for a compact sedan, a fuel-sipping SUV, or a rugged utility vehicle, 2024’s best-sellers show that practicality is now the new prestige.
