A tragic incident occurred in Awka, Anambra State, where a 10-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed his father, Police Inspector Okolie Amechi, using the officer’s service AK-47 rifle.

Reports indicate that the tragic event also left the inspector’s second son injured, as the bullet struck him in the hand during the accidental discharge at their family residence.

The young boy was reportedly handling the rifle when he unintentionally pulled the trigger, hitting his father in the back.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Sunday, Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said Inspector Amechi was confirmed dead by doctors at the hospital he was rushed to, while the injured child is receiving medical care and is responding to treatment.

Ikenga stated, “The Anambra State Police Command is deeply saddened by the unfortunate incident that led to the death of Inspector Okolie Amechi in Awka on the evening of June 15, 2025. Preliminary investigations suggest the discharge was accidental, caused by his 10-year-old son who unknowingly pulled the trigger of the AK-47 rifle assigned to the officer.”

He added that the rifle had been recovered and the inspector’s remains deposited at the morgue.

“The Command extends its condolences to the family and friends of the late officer and wishes the injured child a swift recovery. Further updates will be communicated in due course,” the statement concluded.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
