Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has expressed concern over the growing dominance of tribal and religious sentiments in Nigerian governance, warning that competence is being sidelined in favor of identity politics.

In an interview with Arise Television, Amaechi reflected on his political journey, attributing his rise not to any individual but to divine intervention, Peter Odili, and the judiciary. He dismissed claims that anyone singlehandedly made him governor and denied longstanding political rumors about his relationship with Nyesom Wike.

While avoiding direct political commentary, Amaechi lamented the current state of Nigeria's electoral system. He praised former INEC chairman Attahiru Jega for ensuring transparency during the 2015 elections, contrasting that with the present leadership, which he claims is biased and undermines democratic processes by stifling the registration of new political parties.

Recalling his achievements, Amaechi cited numerous infrastructural developments, including the Lagos–Ibadan railway, Lekki Deep Sea Port, and expansive educational reforms in Rivers State. He emphasized his administration’s focus on free, quality education and healthcare, highlighting model schools, equipped health centers, and significant teacher recruitment efforts.

Despite expressing disappointment over the abandonment of some of his projects, Amaechi remains proud of his contributions. He urged young Nigerians not to lose hope, advocating for resilience, civic participation, and belief in the country’s potential.

When asked about restructuring, he supported it within the framework of national unity—calling for greater power and autonomy for states, including state policing, under strict accountability.

Reflecting on turning 60, Amaechi said he has evolved, learned from past bluntness, and is now more reflective. He wants to be remembered as a leader who served with sincerity and integrity, declaring, “I refused to steal.”

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
