TROOST-EKONG BOWS OUT PROUDLY, LISTS HIS MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS WITH THE SUPER EAGLES
Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing an emotional close to his ten-year journey with Nigeria.
The announcement, made on Thursday, stunned many fans—especially coming just two weeks before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Troost-Ekong had even been named in coach Eric Chelle’s provisional 52-man squad for the tournament, making his sudden exit even more surprising.
Troost-Ekong made his debut for Nigeria in 2015 after receiving a call-up from the late legendary coach Stephen Keshi. Reflecting on his decade-long service, the former Watford defender expressed deep gratitude for the honour of representing and eventually captaining the Super Eagles.
In a heartfelt video shared on social media, he highlighted the milestones that defined his international career:
“To have achieved 83 senior caps, played in five major tournaments, three medals, and broken a few records, I really lived my dreams.”
His journey includes several unforgettable moments:
Bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics
Participation in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia
Three AFCON tournaments, where he earned a bronze medal and most recently a silver medal
Troost-Ekong noted that captaining Nigeria was something he never imagined when he first joined the squad. Yet, his leadership, consistency, and passion made him one of the most respected figures in the team.
As he steps away from the national stage, fans and football lovers across the country continue to celebrate him for his dedication and the legacy he leaves behind.
