TRUMP CALLS FOR RUSSIA TO END ATTACKS AS DIPLOMATIC EFFORTS TO END UKRAINE WAR INTENSIFY

President Donald Trump on Sunday expressed disappointment over Russia's continued attacks on Ukraine and called for an end to the ongoing military aggression. Speaking to reporters in New Jersey, Trump also signaled that the United States might reconsider its involvement in peace negotiations if no significant progress is made soon.

The remarks follow a crucial meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday at the Vatican, the first such encounter since their tense exchange in the White House Oval Office earlier this year. Trump described Zelenskyy as "calmer" after the discussion, noting that the Ukrainian leader now appeared more understanding of the situation and eager to pursue a peaceful resolution. Their talks aimed to revive stalled diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the war in Ukraine.

However, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed Trump’s sentiment, stressing that the Trump administration could walk away from peace negotiations if no meaningful steps are taken toward resolving the conflict. "It needs to happen soon. We cannot continue to dedicate time and resources to this effort if it’s not going to come to fruition," Rubio warned.

The meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy took place during the funeral of Pope Francis in Rome, adding a layer of symbolism to their diplomatic engagement. Following the meeting, Trump condemned Russia's missile attacks on civilian areas, further intensifying his criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In contrast, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in a pre-recorded interview on CBS's "Face the Nation," reaffirmed Russia's position, stating that the country would continue to target Ukraine’s military infrastructure, despite international calls for a ceasefire and peaceful negotiations.

As the diplomatic efforts unfold, the success of peace talks hinges on whether Russia, Ukraine, and international leaders can make meaningful progress toward ending the devastating war.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
