TRUMP SUGGESTS RENAMING NEW MEXICO STATE ‘NEW AMERICA’

United States President Donald Trump has suggested renaming the state of New Mexico as “New America,” continuing what has been described as his recent series of proposals to change geographical names.

Trump suggested in a social media post that many people had proposed changing the state’s name to “New America,” which he described as more prestigious and beautiful.

The White House also reposted an image showing the “Mexico” part of the state’s name crossed out and replaced with “America.”

However, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham quickly dismissed the proposal, saying the state’s name was not open for debate and had existed since before the United States was formed.

The governor accused Trump of attempting to distract Americans from other issues, including rising gas prices.

Some US media reports said the proposal may have originated from an internet hoax.

The suggestion came days after Trump reportedly signed an order proposing to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America” amid tensions with neighbouring Canada.

Trump also previously renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” after returning to the White House in 2025, a move rejected by Mexico.

Last week, he also suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz as “Trump Strait” but later indicated that he might not have been serious about the proposal.

Canada and Mexico have rejected recent attempts to rename geographical locations associated with their countries.
