TURKEY: OSIMHEN FACES BACKLASH OVER ALLEGED DELIBERATE SUSPENSION
Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen is facing scrutiny at his club in Turkey amid claims that he intentionally engineered a suspension ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Osimhen is expected to join the Nigeria squad for the upcoming AFCON tournament soon.
Ahead of Saturday’s Super Lig clash against Antalyaspor, the Nigerian striker was already on a disciplinary watch, having received bookings in previous matches against Beşiktaş, Kocaelispor, and Fenerbahçe.
His 85th-minute yellow card against Antalyaspor triggered a one-match ban. Consequently, Osimhen will miss the upcoming fixture against Kasımpaşa next weekend. Since he is part of Nigeria’s 28-man AFCON squad, he will serve the suspension during the international tournament.
Turkish media outlet Gazete Gerçek reports that Osimhen could be further investigated by the Turkish Football Federation Disciplinary Committee (PFDK).
Article 37 of the disciplinary code addresses situations where players are accused of “deliberately receiving a yellow card.” If found guilty, the player could face a two-match ban under the same article.
Should the Super Eagles advance to the AFCON final, Osimhen risks missing matches against İstanbul Başakşehir, Kasımpaşa, Fethiyespor, Trabzonspor, and Gaziantep FK.
