Two police officers have lost their lives following a deadly explosion in Moscow during an overnight security operation, according to Russia’s Investigative Committee.

The incident happened in the early hours of Wednesday when officers attempted to stop a suspicious individual near their service vehicle. As they approached, an explosive device was triggered, killing both officers at the scene.

Investigators confirmed that forensic teams have since cordoned off the area and are conducting detailed examinations, including medical and explosive analyses, to determine the nature and source of the blast. Russian television footage showed a heavy police presence at the site, with witnesses reporting that the explosion occurred around 1:30 am local time.

The blast reportedly took place close to the location where a senior Russian general was killed earlier this week, raising further concerns about security threats in the capital.

Since Russia began its military campaign in Ukraine in February 2022, several attacks have targeted Russian military officials and pro-Kremlin figures both within Russia and in occupied Ukrainian territories. Ukrainian authorities have previously claimed responsibility for some incidents but have not commented on this latest explosion.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing as they work to identify those responsible and prevent further attacks.
