UCL: MOURINHO SET FOR BENFICA RETURN AFTER BRUNO LAGE’S SHOCK SACKING
Jose Mourinho is set to make a sensational return to Benfica, 25 years after his short first stint at the club, as the Portuguese giants move quickly to replace sacked coach Bruno Lage.
Benfica announced Lage’s dismissal on Tuesday night, just hours after their shocking 3-2 Champions League defeat to Qarabag at home. The Lisbon side had gone 2-0 up early in the match but collapsed as their visitors staged an incredible comeback.
Club president Rui Costa confirmed the decision, stating that it was the right time for a change.
“Today we reached an agreement with Bruno Lage to step down as Benfica’s coach… we believe it’s time for a change,” Rui Costa told reporters on Wednesday morning. “The Benfica coach must be a winner. We won’t talk about names, but we expect a new coach on the bench this Saturday.”
Lage leaves after just one year in charge, during which he won the Portuguese League Cup and secured a second-place league finish.
Mourinho, recently sacked by Turkish side Fenerbahce after losing to Benfica in the Champions League play-off, has now emerged as the clear favorite to take over.
According to Metro, talks between Benfica and the 62-year-old are at an advanced stage, with his appointment expected before the club’s next league game against AVS this weekend.
Mourinho first began his managerial career at Benfica in 2000 but left early following a dispute with the then-club president. Now, a quarter of a century later, the “Special One” looks set to return to where it all started—this time with unfinished business in mind.
