UCL: RASHFORD EQUALS MESSI’S RECORD WITH BRACE FOR BARCELONA
Marcus Rashford has written his name into Barcelona’s history books after equaling a record previously held by Lionel Messi in the UEFA Champions League.
The England forward, currently on loan from Manchester United, scored twice as Barcelona beat Newcastle United 2-1 at St James’ Park on Thursday night.
Rashford’s performance was dominant:
6 shots on goal
10 touches inside Newcastle’s box
5 successful dribbles (the most in the game)
6 possession recoveries
According to Opta, no Barcelona player has achieved such numbers in a Champions League game since Messi in 2015.
Barça manager Hansi Flick praised Rashford after the game, describing the display as “a step in the right direction” for the 26-year-old forward.
With his brace, Rashford not only secured a vital win for Barcelona but also sparked excitement that he could finally be fulfilling his potential on Europe’s biggest stage.
