UEFA has officially addressed the controversial disallowed penalty by Julián Álvarez in the Champions League clash between Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid, confirming that the decision was made in accordance with the current Laws of the Game.

In a statement, UEFA revealed that Atlético Madrid had inquired about the ruling after Álvarez's penalty was disallowed due to a double touch—an incident that sparked debate among fans and analysts.

"Although minimal, the player made contact with the ball using his standing foot before kicking it, as shown in the attached video clip. Under the current rule (Laws of the Game, Law 14.1), the VAR had to call the referee, signaling that the goal should be disallowed," UEFA explained.

However, UEFA also hinted at a potential rule review, stating that discussions with FIFA and IFAB will take place to assess whether unintentional double touches should still lead to disallowed goals.

The incident has reignited discussions about the rigidity of football’s rules, with many calling for greater flexibility in interpreting accidental infractions. As the footballing world awaits further clarification, the debate over Álvarez’s penalty decision continues to divide opinions.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
