UK, CANADA STRENGTHEN PARTNERSHIP ON TRADE, DEFENCE AND AI

The United Kingdom and Canada have agreed to strengthen cooperation in trade, defence and artificial intelligence as both countries seek to deepen their long-standing bilateral relationship. The commitment was made during discussions between British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Liverpool.

The two leaders discussed ways to expand economic ties and create more opportunities for businesses in both countries. Their talks also focused on strengthening cooperation in emerging industries, including artificial intelligence, as governments seek to develop the technology while addressing its economic and security implications.

Defence and security formed another major part of the discussions, with Starmer and Carney reaffirming their commitment to closer collaboration. The two countries are members of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance and NATO, providing an established framework for cooperation on international security and defence matters.

The meeting also covered critical minerals and efforts to strengthen supply chains for resources considered important to modern industries and national security. Both governments have been exploring ways to reduce vulnerabilities in global supply networks while supporting investment and economic growth.

The latest discussions follow Carney’s wider diplomatic engagement with European partners as Canada seeks to expand its international economic relationships.
