The United Kingdom and France are set to lead military talks involving about 30 nations to coordinate efforts aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route.

The discussions come amid rising tensions linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, which has significantly disrupted maritime activities in the region.

Several countries, including Germany, Italy, Japan, and the Netherlands, have already expressed willingness to support operations to ensure safe passage, with more nations joining the initiative.

Britain’s Chief of the Defence Staff, Richard Knighton, has begun coordinating efforts alongside France’s military leadership, including Fabien Mandon.

A larger summit may be hosted in London or Portsmouth to finalise operational plans for reopening the waterway.

The strait, which handles about one-fifth of global oil and gas shipments, has faced major disruptions since late February, contributing to rising energy prices worldwide.

Proposed actions include naval coordination and possible mine-clearing operations, following allegations that explosive devices were deployed in the area.

Meanwhile, Iran has stated that only “non-hostile vessels” will be allowed to pass under strict conditions, excluding ships linked to countries it considers adversaries.

The outcome of the talks is expected to be critical in restoring global energy stability and easing economic pressures.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
