UKRAINIAN SEA DRONE EXPLODES IN ROMANIAN BLACK SEA PORT, NO CASUALTIES REPORTED
A Ukrainian sea drone exploded in Romania’s Black Sea port of Constanta on Friday, with authorities confirming that no injuries or casualties were recorded.
Romania’s defence ministry said the unmanned sea drone, believed to be used in the ongoing war in Ukraine, was not part of its military equipment and self-destructed at about 10:30 a.m. local time.
“The device self-destructed around 10:30 am without causing any casualties,” the ministry said in a statement.
The Ukrainian navy confirmed that the drone had gone off course after being affected by Russian electronic jamming systems.
It said the vessel lost control during operations in the Black Sea and drifted toward Romanian waters before detonating.
Ukraine’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Georgii Tykhyi, said Kyiv had informed Romanian authorities in advance after losing control of multiple naval drones.
Romanian officials said at least four drones were involved, with one exploding in Constanta port and others detonating offshore or being destroyed under supervision.
President Nicușor Dan described the incident as a “significant security event,” linking it to Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine and warning of wider regional risks.
Romanian authorities temporarily evacuated more than 1,000 people from nearby coastal areas and deployed helicopters to monitor the situation.
NATO confirmed it was monitoring the incident and maintaining coordination with Romanian authorities.
The Russian embassy, however, denied any responsibility, insisting the drones were Ukrainian and rejecting any attempt to blame Moscow.
The incident adds to growing tensions in the Black Sea region, where Romania, a NATO and EU member, has reported multiple airspace violations since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022.
