Police Nab Machete-Wielding Man Who Caused Panic in Umuahia

There was tension in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, as residents were thrown into panic after a young man was seen roaming the streets with a machete, threatening and charging at passersby.

The disturbing incident occurred on Ikot Ekpene Road, as well as Ojike and Macauley streets, where the man reportedly moved aggressively from one location to another, creating fear and confusion among residents and shop owners.

His arrest came swiftly after Ifeanyi Okali, founder of ABN TV, spotted the unfolding threat and alerted the Central Police Station (CPS), Umuahia.

Responding promptly, officers of the Abia State Police Command moved in and successfully apprehended and disarmed the man before anyone could be harmed.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, the suspect is believed to be mentally unstable.

“The police were alerted about a young man, suspected to be of unsound mind, seen roaming the streets in Umuahia with a machete. The DPO of Central Police Station confirmed the individual was apprehended and disarmed,” DSP Chinaka said.

The police have urged the public to remain calm and continue reporting any suspicious activity to ensure the safety of all residents.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
