UN WOMEN RAISES CONCERN OVER LOW FEMALE POLITICAL REPRESENTATION IN NIGERIA

UN Women has expressed concern over the low level of female representation in Nigeria’s political space, warning that the imbalance continues to limit inclusive governance and democratic participation.

The organisation noted that women remain significantly underrepresented in elective and appointive positions across various levels of government in Nigeria.

According to UN Women, the situation highlights persistent barriers such as gender bias, limited political financing, cultural challenges, and unequal access to leadership opportunities.

The agency called for stronger policies and institutional reforms to encourage greater participation of women in politics and decision-making processes.

It also urged political parties, government institutions, and civil society groups to create more inclusive platforms that support female candidates and leaders.

Gender advocates say increasing women’s representation in governance is important for balanced policymaking and broader national development.

UN Women reiterated the need for sustained advocacy and collaboration to ensure that more Nigerian women are empowered to actively participate in the country’s democratic process.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
