UNICEF Wants Bauchi Mothers to Get 6 Months Maternity Leave for Better Baby Health

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has called on the Bauchi State Government to approve six months of paid maternity leave for working mothers. This, they say, will give mothers enough time to focus on exclusive breastfeeding, which is very important for their baby’s growth and health.

Speaking at a media briefing to mark World Breastfeeding Week 2025, UNICEF’s Chief of Field Office in Bauchi, Dr. Nuzhat Rafique, warned about the high rate of malnutrition among children in the state.

“We have a serious nutrition crisis in Bauchi. Half of the children are malnourished,” she said. “Breastfeeding is one of the most powerful tools to fight this problem.”

She introduced the “1-6-24 formula” to guide mothers:

1 – Start breastfeeding within one hour after birth

6 – Breastfeed exclusively for six months (no water or food)

24 – Continue breastfeeding with proper food until the child is 2 years old

Dr. Rafique explained that when mothers get proper support from family, health workers, and the government, they are more likely to do the right thing for their babies.

UNICEF’s Nutrition Specialist, Philomina Irene, also supported the call for a month's leave. She revealed that only 2 in 10 babies in Bauchi are exclusively breastfed — far below what’s recommended worldwide.

“Giving working mothers more time at home will help them take better care of their babies,” she said. “We also need breastfeeding-friendly workplaces and more public awareness.”

The State Nutrition Officer, Alhaji Abubakar Sale Sabo Bara, said the government is taking action through awareness campaigns, involving parents, religious leaders, and traditional rulers to promote proper feeding for babies.

He stressed that improving children’s nutrition is a top priority for Bauchi State.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
