United Nigeria Airlines has taken a bold step toward expansion with the signing of a landmark deal to acquire 10 Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

The agreement, reached with Southwest Airlines and facilitated by SkyWorks Holdings LLC, marks a significant milestone in the airline’s growth strategy.

According to the airline, six of the Boeing 737-800s will be delivered this year, while the remaining four will arrive between the first quarter of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027.

Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, Executive Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, said the acquisition will transform the airline’s operations, allowing it to expand into more domestic, regional, and international routes. “This upgrade will enable us to carry more passengers and cargo efficiently, eliminate unnecessary stopovers, and save travelers valuable time,” he said.

Okonkwo also highlighted the wider benefits of the deal, noting that it would generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs while boosting Nigeria’s economy in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s development agenda.

He credited Southwest Airlines’ strong maintenance culture as a key factor in the decision, emphasizing that United Nigeria Airlines shares the same commitment to safety and reliability. The airline also expressed interest in deepening collaboration with Southwest Airlines in areas such as training and technical support.

At the signing ceremony in Dallas, USA, Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing’s Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa, welcomed United Nigeria Airlines to the 737 family. “The 737-800 will provide United Nigeria Airlines with superior reliability, fuel efficiency, and strong value in today’s competitive market,” he said.

Anders Hebrand, Chief Commercial Officer of SkyWorks Holdings, also praised the partnership, stating that the aircraft would thrive in Africa’s growing aviation market.

The Boeing 737-800 is globally renowned for its advanced technology, efficiency, and passenger comfort. With this addition, United Nigeria Airlines is positioning itself as a stronger player in Africa’s aviation industry while offering Nigerians and other travelers more reliable, affordable, and convenient flight options.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
