US COMMENDS NIGERIA’S COUNTERTERRORISM EFFORTS, PLANS FURTHER SUPPORT

The United States has acknowledged what it described as significant progress by Nigeria in the fight against terrorism, while indicating plans to adjust its counterterrorism support to the country.

The assessment was made amid ongoing security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, particularly in intelligence gathering, training and efforts to disrupt terrorist networks operating across the country.

According to the report, the US has recognised recent gains made by Nigerian security forces against terrorist groups, with troops recording successes in several operational theatres.

The acknowledgement comes as Nigerian forces continue offensive operations against terrorist organisations and criminal networks, particularly in the North-East and North-West regions.

The United States has also been providing technical and intelligence assistance to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to detect and respond to terrorist threats.

As part of the evolving cooperation, the US is reportedly considering a reduction in the number of counterintelligence trainers supporting Nigerian security agencies. The move is linked to the progress made in building local capacity rather than a complete withdrawal of American assistance.

The development is expected to see Nigerian personnel take on greater responsibility for counterterrorism intelligence operations while maintaining cooperation with their American counterparts.

Nigeria’s security forces have in recent months reported several successful operations against terrorist groups, including the neutralisation of fighters, destruction of camps and recovery of weapons and other equipment.

The military has also continued efforts to rescue civilians held captive by terrorist groups and prevent attacks on vulnerable communities.

The US assessment provides international recognition of some of these efforts, although terrorism and other forms of insecurity remain significant challenges across parts of the country.

Security experts have continued to stress the importance of intelligence sharing, border security, counterterrorism financing and cooperation between Nigeria and international partners in dealing with armed groups.

The Nigerian Government has similarly maintained that sustained military pressure, improved intelligence capabilities and international cooperation are necessary to weaken terrorist networks and restore lasting peace.

The latest development suggests that while the United States sees progress in Nigeria’s counterterrorism campaign, security cooperation between both countries is expected to continue, with greater emphasis on strengthening Nigeria’s own intelligence and operational capabilities.
