Varsity Don Urges Graduates To Embrace Skill Acquisition To Combat Unemployment
Dr. Vincent Paul, a senior lecturer in the Department of Entrepreneurship Studies at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, has urged unemployed graduates across Nigeria to pursue skill acquisition as a viable means of addressing the nation’s persistent unemployment crisis.
Speaking on Wednesday in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, during the inauguration of the university’s Alumni Association National Executive Council and the launch of its Trust Fund for Legacy Projects, Dr. Paul emphasized the importance of graduates harnessing their talents and developing practical skills to secure their livelihoods.
He noted that with the scarcity of white-collar job opportunities, young people must become proactive and seek alternative paths to financial independence and self-reliance.
The lecturer also called on Nigerian political leaders to support youth empowerment by organizing regular skill development initiatives, which he said would not only reduce unemployment but also contribute to societal growth.
“As a Nigerian graduate, it is vital to acquire a skill. Doing so equips you to start your own business and earn an income while still pursuing your dream job,” he stated.
“Many individuals have become employers through skills. I encourage the youth to take full advantage of this opportunity,” he added.
Dr. Paul also charged the newly inaugurated Alumni executives to lead with impact by initiating sustainable programs that would foster development and uplift the association’s members.
He advised that the Alumni Trust Fund be strategically used for legacy projects, entrepreneurial ventures, financial sustainability, and smooth leadership transitions to inspire hope among less-privileged members.
“To achieve meaningful goals as an association, building a strong financial base is crucial,” he said. “As NSUK Alumni, our bond goes beyond shared memories—we have a collective duty to preserve our legacy, empower future generations, and establish lasting structures.”
In his remarks, the new National President of the Alumni Association, Nuhu Egya, expressed gratitude to members and the university community for their trust, promising to work diligently to advance the association's goals.
