VETERAN JUJU MUSIC LEGEND AHUJA BELLO PASSES AWAY AT 83
Nigeria has lost one of its music greats. Ahuja Bello, the celebrated Juju musician of the 1970s and 1980s, has passed away at the age of 83.
His son, Adetunji Bello, confirmed the sad news in a statement on Sunday, revealing that the veteran singer died in the early hours of the day, just a day after marking his birthday.
A Life in Music
Born Ismaila Dele Bello on August 24, 1942, in Iseyin, Oyo State, Ahuja Bello first worked as an electronic technician before fully chasing his passion for music. In 1976, he formed Ahuja Bello and His Golden Eagles Band, which quickly rose to fame and dominated the Juju music scene.
Known for his electrifying stage performances and timeless tracks like Awa ti Danfo and Ariya ti de, Bello became a household name. His talent also took him beyond Nigeria’s borders; in 1979, he traveled to London to record Ahuja in London, a project that connected him with international stars, including the legendary Bob Marley.
A Career Interrupted, A Legacy Secured
Sadly, in July 1982, Bello’s flourishing career was disrupted by a serious accident, just weeks before his 40th birthday. Despite this setback, his earlier works and influence ensured his place among the icons of Nigerian music.
Today, fans remember him not just as a Juju musician, but as a pioneer whose sound defined an era and inspired generations. His music lives on as a reminder of the golden days of Juju and his enduring artistry.
May his soul rest in peace.
