Military veterans have called for a minimum monthly salary of ₦250,000 for serving soldiers during a meeting with the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), citing rising living costs and the need to improve the welfare of personnel.

The veterans said better remuneration would boost the morale of troops, enhance operational effectiveness, and serve as motivation for those risking their lives to defend the country.

They stressed that improved welfare should remain a priority, noting that soldiers continue to face significant security challenges in various parts of the country.

According to the veterans, adequate salaries, improved allowances, quality healthcare, and better living conditions are essential to maintaining a professional and motivated military.

The delegation also urged the Defence Headquarters to strengthen support for retired personnel, including improved pensions and access to welfare programmes.

Responding to the concerns, the Chief of Defence Staff acknowledged the sacrifices made by both serving and retired military personnel and assured the delegation that their requests would receive due consideration.

The CDS reaffirmed the commitment of the Armed Forces to improving the welfare of personnel while continuing efforts to enhance operational capacity and national security.

Security analysts noted that competitive remuneration and improved welfare packages play a crucial role in boosting troop morale, retention, and overall effectiveness.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of sustained dialogue between military authorities and veterans to address welfare concerns and strengthen institutional support.

The veterans expressed hope that the government would take concrete steps to improve the welfare of soldiers in recognition of their service and sacrifice to the nation.
