VISA OVERSTAYS MAY AFFECT NIGERIAN TRAVELLERS, U.S MISSION WARNS
The United States Mission in Nigeria has warned that visa overstays by Nigerian travellers could negatively affect opportunities for other Nigerians seeking to travel to the United States.
In a statement shared on its X handle on Monday, the mission stressed the importance of obeying U.S. immigration laws and complying with visa conditions.
According to the mission, when travellers overstay their visas or violate entry rules, it may affect the general perception of compliance among applicants from the same country and could influence future visa decisions.
“Visa overstays by Nigerian travellers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens.
“Strengthening compliance helps protect access for students, business travellers, and families who travel responsibly,” the statement read.
The mission noted that many Nigerians travel to the United States for education, business, tourism, and family visits, and urged travellers to respect the terms of their visas throughout their stay.
It also warned that visa fraud and misuse of travel documents remain serious concerns.
The mission encouraged members of the public with credible information about visa fraud to report it through official consular fraud prevention channels.
Individuals were asked to send reports through AbujaFPU@state.gov or LagosFPU@state.gov.
The U.S. Mission reaffirmed its commitment to promoting safe, legal, and orderly travel between Nigeria and the United States while ensuring that law-abiding travellers are not disadvantaged by the actions of others.
