Akure, Ondo State — A Vice Principal at Complete Child Development College, Aule, Akure, was reportedly assaulted by suspected thugs allegedly hired by a student’s parent after he prevented the student from cheating during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The Vice Principal, identified as Mr. Rotifa, had reportedly confiscated an Android phone from an SS3 student during the exam, in line with the school’s regulations against the use of mobile phones in examination halls.

According to a preliminary report by the Ondo State Ministry of Education’s Director of Schools, the incident began on May 26 when the device was discovered. The student's mother later visited the school and created a scene, demanding the return of the phone. The school's proprietor eventually instructed that the phone be handed back to her.

The situation escalated when the student’s brother—an alumnus of the school—allegedly arrived later that day to threaten and harass Mr. Rotifa.

Following reports of the suspects loitering around the school premises after hours, the proprietor advised the Vice Principal to report the matter to the police. Mr. Rotifa complied, and two officers accompanied him in a patrol vehicle in an attempt to apprehend the suspects.

However, on their way back to the station, the group was ambushed. The assailants reportedly intercepted the police vehicle, forcibly removed Mr. Rotifa, and physically attacked him. He was later taken to a hospital for treatment. The school's principal confirmed that while Mr. Rotifa has since been discharged, he has avoided returning home due to ongoing concerns for his safety.

Authorities have launched further investigations, and measures are being put in place to ensure the safety of staff and students for the duration of the WASSCE.
