The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has lauded the determination and bravery of Nigerian troops, especially those operating in the North-West, for their continued efforts in combating security challenges.

Speaking during a Sallah Luncheon organized for personnel of the North West Taskforce, Operation Hadarin Daji (Fansan Yamma), in Sokoto on Friday, Oluyede reaffirmed the military’s commitment to national peace.

“Our mission is clear — to secure lasting peace across Nigeria. Though adversaries remain active, we are unwavering in our resolve,” he stated.

Represented by Maj.-Gen. Adeleke Ayannuga, Commander of the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command, the COAS also pledged better welfare packages for troops and their families deployed in various formations nationwide.

He acknowledged the sacrifices made by the soldiers, assuring them that their service and dedication have not gone unnoticed.

Reiterating the Nigerian Army’s core responsibility of safeguarding lives and property, Oluyede said the military remains fully prepared to fulfill its mandate and meet the expectations of Nigerians.

He commended the resilience of troops across the country and called on citizens to sustain their support and collaboration with the military to overcome prevailing security threats.

“We are grateful for the backing of Nigerians and urge continued partnership to secure our nation,” he added.

Lt.-Gen. Oluyede also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for the consistent provision of resources and an enabling environment that supports military operations nationwide.

He urged personnel to maintain professionalism, steer clear of misconduct, and work in harmony with other security agencies while fostering trust with civilians.

Describing soldiers as embodiments of bravery and sacrifice, Oluyede noted that their dedication continues to inspire national pride and unity.

“Eid al-Adha is a reminder of sacrifice — a principle that mirrors the daily experiences of our troops across operational theatres. Stay strong and draw strength from the spiritual significance of the season,” he encouraged.

Earlier in the event, Maj.-Gen. Ibikunle Ajose, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division and Commander of Sector 2, Operation Fansan Yamma, praised the COAS’ leadership approach, describing it as a significant morale booster.

Ajose said the luncheon served to honour not just the Eid celebration, but also the courage, achievements, and collective determination of the troops.

He highlighted improvements in regional security, noting that areas such as the Funtua-Gusau-Sokoto road are now safer, and peace has been restored in communities across four states once troubled by criminal activities.

As part of the celebration, Oluyede, Ajose, and other senior officers personally served meals to soldiers.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including the Sultan’s representative, Dr. Jabbi Kilgori, Sokoto State Commissioner of Police Ahmed Musa, and heads of other security agencies.

The festivities featured cultural displays, traditional dances, and other recreational activities for the troops.

Lt.-Gen. Oluyede also paid a visit to the Army Clinic, where he met with injured soldiers and reassured them of the Army’s ongoing care and support.
