Wema Bank, Nigeria’s pioneering indigenous financial institution, has celebrated its 80th anniversary with a grand event in Lagos, marking eight decades of transformation, customer-centric innovation, and national economic contribution.

Founded on May 2, 1945, as Agbonmagbe Bank Limited, Wema Bank has grown from a single-branch outfit into one of Nigeria’s most dynamic financial institutions. Today, it boasts over 150 branches across the country and a global reach through its trailblazing digital platform, ALAT—Nigeria’s first fully digital bank.

To commemorate the historic milestone, the bank hosted a glamorous ‘Wema at 80 Gala Night’ on Friday, May 2, 2025, under the theme “Timeless Elegance.” The event brought together industry leaders, cultural icons, and stakeholders across generations.

The evening featured electrifying performances by Afrobeats stars Davido and Wande Coal, Fuji legend Sir Shina Peters, vocal powerhouse Yinka Davies, and hitmaker 9ice, making it a night to remember for guests and well-wishers alike.

In his address, Wema Bank’s Managing Director and CEO, Moruf Oseni, paid tribute to the institution’s long-standing role in empowering Nigerians and transforming the financial landscape.

“Wema at 80 is not just a milestone—it’s a symbol of resilience, vision, and unwavering belief in the potential of Nigerian institutions,” said Oseni. “This bank was born in the era of colonial rule to serve indigenous interests, and eight decades later, we’re still delivering value, building trust, and driving innovation.”

He extended heartfelt appreciation to the bank’s customers, staff, shareholders, and partners for their continued support.

“Everyone who has contributed to our journey shares in this moment. We are Wema—built to last, built for you. Our commitment to delivering excellence has never been stronger.”

Wema Bank has been instrumental in deepening financial inclusion and supporting underserved communities and businesses through customized financial solutions. Its legacy includes supporting startups, enabling SMEs, and making digital banking accessible to millions of Nigerians.

Looking ahead, the bank pledged to continue breaking new ground while upholding its founding mission.

“The next chapter holds limitless promise,” Oseni concluded. “As always, We Are With You, All The Way.”

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
