The US Mission in Nigeria has updated visa holders on the permitted uses of the B1/B2 visitor visa, urging strict compliance to avoid future travel bans.

In a statement shared on its official X account on Tuesday, the embassy listed the approved purposes for the non-immigrant visa as business meetings, visiting family, and tourism.

“Here’s what you CAN use your U.S. B1/B2 Visa for: ✓ Business meetings ✓ Visiting family ✓ Tourism,” the post read.

The embassy warned that improper use of the visa could result in permanent ineligibility for future U.S. visas.

“Remember; Improper use of your U.S. B1/B2 visa can result in permanent ineligibility for a visa in the future,” it stated.

What is US B1/B2 visa?

The B1/B2 visa is a combined nonimmigrant visa that allows foreign nationals to visit the United States temporarily for specific purposes.

The B1 category covers business activities such as attending meetings, conferences, negotiating contracts, or participating in short-term training, while the B2 category is for tourism, visiting family and friends, medical treatment, or other pleasure-related travel.

The visa typically permits stays of up to six months, though the exact duration is determined by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the port of entry.

It does not permit employment, enrollment in long-term academic programs, or any activities that suggest intent to immigrate or reside permanently in the U.S.

Nigerians are eligible to apply for B1/B2 visas through the U.S. Embassy in Abuja or the Consulate in Lagos, as Nigeria is not part of the Visa Waiver Programme.

Approval depends on demonstrating strong ties to Nigeria (such as family, employment, or property), sufficient funds for the trip, and a clear intention to return after the visit.

The reminder comes months after the US Department of State announced that, effective January 1, 2026, it would partially suspend visa issuance to nationals of 19 countries, including Nigeria, under Presidential Proclamation 10998.

Under the measure, the suspension applies to nonimmigrant B1/B2 visitor visas, F, M and J student and exchange visitor visas, as well as all immigrant visas, subject to specified exceptions.

However, the proclamation does not affect foreign nationals who held valid U.S. visas before January 1, 2026, and no visas issued before that date were revoked under the policy.

The State Department also said affected applicants could continue to submit visa applications and attend interviews but might be ineligible for visa issuance or admission into the United States if they fall within the scope of the proclamation.
