WHY LAGOS ROADS ARE BREAKING DOWN – AGENCY EXPLAINS

The Lagos State Public Works Corporation has attributed the deteriorating condition of many roads in the state to a combination of heavy rainfall, heavy vehicular traffic, and inadequate funding for routine maintenance.

The agency explained that the recent downpours have exposed weaknesses in older road infrastructure, particularly in areas with poor drainage systems. Officials noted that increased commercial activities and the sheer volume of vehicles on Lagos roads accelerate wear and tear, leading to frequent potholes and surface failures.

The corporation acknowledged the public frustration and assured residents that repair works are ongoing in several affected areas. It called for greater public cooperation, including proper waste disposal to prevent drainage blockages that exacerbate flooding and road damage.

Experts have recommended long-term solutions such as the use of more durable materials, improved drainage designs, and increased investment in road maintenance. They also stressed the importance of regular infrastructure audits to identify and address potential problems before they escalate.

The Lagos State Government has promised to prioritise road rehabilitation projects and explore public-private partnerships to enhance the quality and longevity of the state’s road network.
