WHY TRUMP, REPUBLICANS LOST 2026 MIDTERM ELECTIONS — REPORT

Voter frustration over living costs, President Donald Trump’s economic policies and concerns about government corruption contributed to Republican losses in the 2026 US midterm elections, according to a nationwide voter survey.

The findings suggest many Americans used the elections to express dissatisfaction with the administration rather than strong enthusiasm for the Democratic Party.

Household Costs Weighed on Voters

Rising grocery, healthcare and fuel expenses were major concerns, with many respondents saying Trump had failed to deliver on promises to bring prices down.

About two-thirds of voters surveyed said his policies had worsened the economy. Approximately eight in 10 within that group supported Democratic candidates.

In Texas, voters reporting financial hardship strongly favoured Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico.

Concerns About Corruption and Priorities

More than half of respondents described government corruption as crucial to their voting decision.

The survey also recorded concerns about Trump’s business interests, cryptocurrency ventures and corporate donations towards a proposed White House ballroom.

About two-thirds said the President did not have the right priorities, with most of those voters backing Democrats in House races.

Candidate Choices and Congressional Oversight

The poll suggested that some Republican candidates faced difficulties linked to their personal reputations and close association with Trump.

It also found strong demand for greater scrutiny of the presidency. Around seven in 10 voters said Congress was not providing enough checks and balances, including roughly four in 10 Republicans.

However, the results did not indicate overwhelming approval of Democrats. Only about half of respondents viewed the party favourably, compared with approximately four in 10 for Republicans.

The survey was conducted among registered voters across all 50 states between October 19 and November 3.

Its findings point to several influences on the outcome, rather than a single explanation for the Republican defeat.
