WIKE FACTION BLEEDS AGAIN: ATIKU ADDRESSES OBOREVWORI'S EXIT FROM PDP

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reiterated that the rights to freedom of association and expression are essential foundations of democracy, not privileges.

Atiku made this assertion in a statement posted on X on Friday, in reaction to the wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including that of Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, who recently joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

"Let me be clear: freedom of association and expression are fundamental rights in any democracy. They are non-negotiable," Atiku wrote. "These rights, together with the principles of the rule of law, credible elections, accountability, and the will of the people, are the pillars of a just and functional democracy. When any of these are compromised, democracy itself is at risk."

The DAILY POST earlier reported that Oborevwori formally left the PDP for the APC, while his predecessor, Ifeanyi Okowa, is also expected to join the ruling party soon.

Oborevwori had succeeded Okowa after winning the 2023 gubernatorial election under the PDP's banner. However, the PDP has recently faced significant internal challenges, losing members—including governors and top figures—to the APC, with more defections reportedly underway.

Addressing these developments, Atiku stressed that political realignments and defections are natural elements of Nigeria’s evolving democratic system and should not necessarily be viewed as acts of betrayal.

"As someone who firmly believes in democratic principles, I hold no grudges against anyone choosing a different political course," Atiku said. "Political alliances shift over time. We have witnessed such movements in the past, and they will continue into the future."

He concluded by warning that any effort to undermine these fundamental democratic rights poses a grave threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
