Dele Momodu, a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has described the recent directive to withdraw police escorts from Very Important Personalities (VIPs) as a move designed to weaken the opposition.

Momodu made the remarks on Wednesday during an interview on Prime Time, a programme on Arise Television. He argued that the policy should target politicians in the nation’s capital rather than ordinary Nigerians.

His comments follow President Bola Tinubu’s order to withdraw all police escorts assigned to VIPs, redeploying them to enhance core policing across communities nationwide.

Speaking on the programme, the former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant said: “Those who should lose their police escorts are politicians in Abuja, not the ordinary citizen. It is not a crime to be successful, and figures like Dangote and Otedola should retain their security details. Removing police escorts from them is part of a strategy to stifle opposition.”

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
