A former Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has expressed concern over what she described as a growing trend of women allegedly using steroids to fake pregnancies in order to deceive their husbands.

Speaking at a public event, the former NAPTIP boss said the alleged practice has become increasingly worrying, noting that some women are reportedly manipulated into the act by fraudulent individuals who exploit couples struggling with infertility.

She explained that the use of steroids and other substances to create the appearance of pregnancy, alongside other deceptive practices, often results in emotional, financial, and psychological harm to affected families.

The former NAPTIP DG urged couples experiencing fertility challenges to seek medical advice from qualified healthcare professionals rather than falling victim to individuals promising illegal or fraudulent solutions.

She also called on security agencies and relevant authorities to intensify efforts to investigate and dismantle criminal networks involved in pregnancy-related scams and other forms of exploitation.

Medical experts have consistently warned against the misuse of steroids, noting that taking such drugs without proper medical supervision can pose serious health risks.

The former agency head appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities linked to pregnancy scams or related fraudulent schemes to the appropriate authorities.

She further stressed the importance of public awareness campaigns to educate families about the dangers of medical deception and the need to verify claims through legitimate healthcare providers.

Stakeholders also called for stronger collaboration between healthcare institutions, law enforcement agencies, and community leaders to combat fraudulent practices targeting vulnerable families.

The remarks have renewed discussions on the need for greater public education, improved access to reproductive healthcare, and stricter enforcement against individuals involved in medical fraud.
