WOMEN NOW OUTNUMBER MEN IN HIGHER EDUCATION GLOBALLY – UNESCO

Women have officially surpassed men in global higher education enrollment, according to new data released by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The report shows a steady rise in female participation in universities and tertiary institutions across many regions, marking a major shift in global education trends over the past decades.

UNESCO noted that the growth reflects improved access to education for girls and women, alongside long-term efforts by governments and international organisations to close gender gaps in schooling.

However, the agency also highlighted that while more women are now entering higher education, disparities still exist in certain fields, particularly in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), where men continue to dominate in many countries.

The report further observed that economic barriers, cultural norms, and unequal access to resources still limit opportunities for some women, especially in low-income regions.

Education experts say the trend represents a significant milestone for global development, as higher education attainment is closely linked to improved employment opportunities, income levels, and social mobility.

UNESCO urged countries to not only sustain progress in female enrollment but also focus on ensuring equal outcomes in employment and leadership positions after graduation.

The organisation emphasized that closing remaining gender gaps in education quality and career opportunities remains essential for achieving global equality and sustainable development goals.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
