WORLD BANK APPROVES $300M LOAN TO SUPPORT MILLIONS IN NORTHERN NIGERIA
The World Bank has approved a $300 million loan to help improve the lives of millions of people in Northern Nigeria, particularly those living in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps and surrounding host communities.
The financing, approved on August 7, 2025, is expected to benefit up to 7.4 million Nigerians who have been affected by conflict, insecurity, and displacement in the region.
According to the World Bank, the project will focus on strengthening resilience and improving access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and livelihood opportunities for both IDPs and the communities that host them.
World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Mathew Verghis, described the initiative as a crucial step in tackling the long-term challenges of displacement.
“We are glad to support this initiative, which has a tremendous potential to help Nigeria in addressing development challenges associated with protracted displacement in a sustainable way,” Verghis said.
The funding aims to create a more stable environment for displaced families, reduce their reliance on aid, and promote long-term development in affected areas.
