WORLD BLOOD DONOR DAY: NBSA BOSS CALLS FOR MORE VOLUNTARY DONATIONS

The head of the National Blood Service Agency (NBSA) has called for increased voluntary blood donations as Nigeria marks World Blood Donor Day.

He stressed the need for a stronger culture of regular, unpaid blood donation to ensure safe and adequate supply for hospitals across the country.

According to him, voluntary blood donation remains the most reliable way to meet the growing demand for blood needed in emergencies, surgeries, childbirth complications, and treatment of chronic illnesses.

He noted that many healthcare facilities in Nigeria still face shortages, which can delay life-saving treatments for patients in critical condition.

The NBSA boss urged Nigerians, especially young people, to embrace blood donation as a humanitarian responsibility and a way of saving lives.

He also encouraged awareness campaigns to correct misconceptions and fears surrounding blood donation, which he said often discourage participation.

Health experts say improving voluntary blood donation rates is key to strengthening the country’s healthcare system and reducing preventable deaths.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
