YABATECH MATRICULATES 17,130 STUDENTS, WARNS AGAINST CULTISM
Yaba College of Technology on Thursday matriculated 17,130 students for the 2025/2026 academic session and warned them against cultism, examination malpractice, bullying, and drug abuse.
Speaking at the matriculation ceremony, the Rector of YABATECH, Ibraheem Abdul, disclosed that 24,655 candidates applied for admission, while 17,130 were admitted into National Diploma, Higher National Diploma, and B.Sc Education programmes after screening exercises.
The institution currently runs its Bachelor of Science in Education programme through an academic affiliation with the University of Nigeria, which accredits the curriculum, moderates examinations, and awards the degrees.
Abdul described the matriculating students as future leaders, innovators, and change-makers whose academic journey would shape national development and global competitiveness.
“The nation looks to your generation for solutions in technology, innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development. YABATECH is ready to equip you through determination, discipline, and unwavering academic focus,” he said.
The rector also revealed that President Bola Tinubu had approved the institution’s transition into a Technical and Vocational University.
According to him, the move recognises the institution’s long-standing contributions to skills-based education and industrial development.
Abdul warned students that anyone involved in cult-related activities would face expulsion and possible prosecution.
“Choose honour, discipline, and academic excellence; the opportunities before you are enormous,” he said.
He encouraged students to join recognised academic and professional associations while making effective use of the institution’s workshops, laboratories, studios and ICT facilities.
The rector also stressed that students must maintain at least 75 per cent lecture attendance in line with institutional and National Board for Technical Education requirements.
Speaking during the event, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Simon Ortuanya, represented by Catherine Ogbuanya, urged students to embrace discipline, innovation and excellence.
He warned against examination malpractice, cultism, drug abuse, and misconduct, emphasising the university’s zero tolerance for indiscipline.
Ortuanya further encouraged students to develop critical thinking, research, and entrepreneurial skills for global competitiveness and leadership.
