The Yobe State House of Assembly has raised fresh concerns over the growing spread of kidney disease across the state, calling on the government to take urgent and proactive measures to control the situation.

The call came during Wednesday’s plenary after a motion of urgent public importance was moved by Hon. Sadiq Yahaya (Bade West) and Hon. Buba Maina Sale (Tarmuwa).

The lawmakers noted that kidney disease, which was once concentrated in the northern part of the state, has now spread to other local government areas, describing the development as alarming.

They emphasized the need for health experts to speed up investigations to identify the root cause of the disease. At the same time, they urged the government to intensify public awareness campaigns to educate residents while investigations continue.

The Assembly also commended the state government for its interventions so far, such as providing free dialysis to patients and setting up investigative committees. However, they stressed the need for additional dialysis centers in Gashua and Potiskum, so victims in other zones can access treatment more easily.

Other lawmakers, including Hon. Adamu Dala Dogo (Karasuwa), Hon. Buba Ibrahim Kalallawa (Damaturu II), Hon. Bukar Mustapha (Geidam Central), and Hon. Digma Maina Gana (Damagum), all described the motion as timely and critical.

In his ruling, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chiroma Buba Mashio, urged Yobe’s representatives in the National Assembly to push for federal government support to complement the state’s efforts in addressing the health crisis.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
