She is currently receiving medical attention at St. Mary’s Hospital in Okpoga. As of Sunday morning, there had been no communication from the kidnappers to the victims' families. Jun 01, 2025 -- (3 hours ago)The Nigerian Catholic Diocesan Priests Association (NCDPA), Makurdi Diocese, has sounded the alarm over a wave of deadly attacks by suspected armed herdsmen in Benue State, reporting that over 50 lives have been lost and 15 Catholic parishes shut down within a month. At a press conference held on Sunday, the Chairman of NCDPA in the Makurdi Diocese, Rev. Fr. Joseph Beba, condemned the sustained violence, which he described as a systematic attempt to wipe out Tiv communities. He accused security forces—particularly the military stationed in the region—of inaction and possible complicity.“Priests have not been spared in these brutal attacks, forcing the closure of 15 parishes within our diocese,” Fr. Beba stated, criticizing what he called the deafening silence of the military while communities are being ravaged. Among the recent incidents cited was the shooting of Rev. Fr. Solomon Atongo of St. John’s Quasi Parish, Jimba. He was attacked just 500 meters from a military checkpoint at Tse Orbiam, yet no intervention followed. The community was subsequently overrun by armed assailants. Other affected communities include Tse Orbiam, Ahume, Jimba, Nagi-Camp, Aondoana, Yelewata, and Abegana—areas all within the Makurdi Diocese. The priests said the victims included women, children, and even a pregnant woman, highlighting the harrowing human cost. “These are cruel and barbaric acts that defy humanity and desecrate the sanctity of life,” the priests said. They also suggested that the escalation may be linked to recent testimonies by Bishop Wilfred Anagbe in the United States and Europe, where he spoke about the persecution of Christians in Nigeria. “The attacks appear to be a direct hit on Bishop Anagbe and the Catholic Church he represents. They are calculated and retaliatory,” the priests said, pointing out that Aondoana—the bishop’s home village—was attacked on May 25, forcing priests and nuns to flee into the forest. Another attack occurred on May 26 in Nagi-Camp, located just five kilometers from a Nigerian Army base in Agagbe, with no military response reported. The next night, Yelewata in Guma Local Government Area was also attacked, resulting in the massacre of an entire family. Rev. Fr. Jonathan Ukuma narrowly escaped death. The clergy expressed frustration at the absence of federal and state government support, noting that no official visits or gestures of solidarity have been made to the affected communities or the Church. “The silence of the military is disturbing. Their actions—or lack thereof—raise serious questions about their allegiance,” they added, citing the worsening security along the Naka-Makurdi and Taraku-Naka roads as evidence of the state’s deteriorating safety. They called on Governor Hyacinth Alia to take urgent action against what they described as an ongoing “ethnic cleansing” of the Tiv people and urged President Bola Tinubu to declare a full-scale war against the terrorist elements identified by the governor as foreign mercenaries. “A failure to act will be interpreted as complicity or indifference. Silence in the face of this evil is a death sentence,” they warned. The priests also demanded immediate government compensation for victims and the return of displaced persons to their ancestral homes, stressing the government’s constitutional responsibility to protect citizens’ lives and dignity.Reaffirming their faith, the clergy vowed not to be silenced and called on Nigerian youths to defend their faith, farmlands, and communities—peacefully and within the law. “The right to self-defence is inalienable and must be upheld for every citizen,” they declared.

Jun 01, 2025 -- (3 hours ago)Mrs. Olorunwa Sanni, mother of 16-year-old Omobewaji Sanni — a WASSCE candidate of Seico Secondary School who was tragically killed by a truck driver — shares her pain and loss with Bankole Taiwo. Can you tell us about yourself?I'm 51 years old, from Ijebu Ode. I design caps for a living. What happened to your daughter? My daughter, Omobewaji, was just 16 and taking her WASSCE exams at Seico Secondary School in Ikangba, Ijebu Ode, when she was struck by a truck. We were told that about eight students were walking home when the driver lost control and veered toward them. Omobewaji and another girl, Aliyah, tried to escape by running into a church compound and hiding behind the fence, but the driver still drove through and fatally hit them. Did they both die instantly?Aliyah died on the spot. Omobewaji was rushed to the General Hospital in Ijebu Ode around 11 a.m. The medical staff did all they could — she received four pints of blood, her wounds were stitched, and she was placed on oxygen. We were later referred to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu. But while preparing for an X-ray, she passed away. How old was Omobewaji? She would have turned 17 in September. Was she always a student at Seico Secondary School? No. She was a student at Adeola Odutola College, Ijebu Ode. But when she reached SS3 last year, we discovered she was pregnant — already five months along. We had thought she was just dealing with malaria. She had to drop out, but I believed one mistake shouldn’t ruin her future. I registered her as an external WASSCE candidate at Seico School so she could still sit for the exam. She gave birth to a baby boy on February 2 — just three months ago. What was she like?Omobewaji was kind, intelligent, and full of dreams. Since primary school, she had always said she wanted to be a doctor. Her teachers at Adeola Odutola College can vouch for her brilliance.Even in the hospital, while in pain, someone who overheard her speaking was so moved by her intelligence that they gave us N10,000, pleading that we do everything possible to save her.She was my last child. Her father died when she was not even two years old, and I’ve been raising her and her three siblings alone ever since.Just before she passed, we were already planning her next steps. I had intended to enroll her in a nursing apprenticeship and then register her for JAMB next year. She wanted to study at the University of Ilorin. I had promised to support her dream of becoming a doctor. Now, she’s gone — leaving behind her three-month-old son. What about the truck driver?Initially, we heard the driver fled while the motor boy was caught. But I’ve since been told both are now in police custody. How are you coping? The pain is unbearable. I’ve been on constant medication and injections. But I draw strength from God — I have to stay strong for my grandson. How is the baby doing? He’s doing well, but caring for him has been tough financially. He was being exclusively breastfed, but now we rely on infant formula, which costs about N12,500 per tin. He’s almost done with the third one.The hospital expenses trying to save his mum’s life must have exceeded N750,000. We’ve survived on help from kind-hearted people. If there’s any support the government can provide, even if just a scholarship for the child, it would mean the world to us. Did you ever imagine this would happen? Not at all. That morning, she breastfed her baby, took pictures with him, and left happily for school. I never thought it would be the last time I'd see her alive.

Jun 01, 2025 -- (4 hours ago)The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has attributed the fatal road crash that killed 21 athletes and officials from Kano State to excessive speed and driver fatigue. The victims were returning from the 2024 National Sports Festival in Abeokuta when their coaster bus veered off the Kaduna-Kano Expressway near Gadar Yankifi around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. The bus, bearing the registration number KN 041 A17, was carrying 24 passengers — 23 men and one woman. Only three people, including the lone female passenger, survived with injuries and were taken to hospital. According to FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide, the crash is believed to have resulted from a long overnight journey that left the driver fatigued and prone to speeding. The deceased included athletes in wrestling and kickboxing, journalists, referees, sports officials, medical personnel, and drivers. Among them was football referee Imam Umar Fagge, younger brother to the acting chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission. FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed expressed deep sorrow over the incident and urged transport operators to prioritize rest periods and speed regulations, particularly during night travel when visibility is poor.President Bola Tinubu called the tragedy a “devastating blow to the nation,” urging improved safety standards in national transportation. “The best way to honour the victims is by taking concrete steps to prevent such occurrences,” he said. Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, where the sports festival was hosted, expressed heartbreak over the loss of young talents who had represented Kano with pride. Kano’s Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, described the incident as a deeply painful moment for the state. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also mourned the victims, calling them “dedicated and full of promise.”In response, the National Sports Commission announced new safety measures, including mandatory insurance for athletes and mechanical certification for all official transport vehicles during sporting events. Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade of the commission both expressed grief, acknowledging the tragedy as a heavy blow to Nigeria’s sports community.

Jun 01, 2025 -- (4 hours ago)The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has launched an internal investigation following a major leakage of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) papers, particularly the English Language exam, which surfaced online four days before the scheduled date. Sources revealed that some officials of the council might have been involved in the leak. The incident prompted a nationwide scramble to reprint question papers, leading to severe delays. In several states—Lagos, Ogun, Taraba, and Osun—students sat for the rescheduled exam late into the night, often in darkness, using torchlights and lanterns due to power outages. WAEC admitted the delay, citing efforts to combat examination malpractice and secure exam integrity. The acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, explained that the situation was complicated by logistical issues and security concerns. An estimated 1.97 million candidates registered for this year’s exam across over 23,000 schools. The scandal comes on the heels of recent disruptions in the 2025/2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, adding to concerns about Nigeria’s examination systems. Inside the LeakAccording to insider accounts, a syndicate allegedly monetized the leaked papers via platforms on WhatsApp and Telegram. One such group reportedly had over 80,000 subscribers, charging between N1,000 and N5,000 per subject. The English Language paper, including essay and objective sections, was reportedly shared as early as May 24, days ahead of the exam.Authorities are now tracing digital payment trails to identify culprits, and security agencies have begun investigations. Some council staff reportedly worked nonstop for 48 hours to manage the emergency. Anger from Parents and StudentsThe fallout from the delayed exams sparked outrage among parents and candidates. Many parents decried the psychological toll on students, some of whom didn’t return home until close to midnight. The National Parents Teachers Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN) demanded the cancellation and rescheduling of the English Language paper, arguing that the conditions under which students wrote the exam were mentally and physically draining.Parents described the ordeal as traumatic. Several said their children were too exhausted to prepare for the next day’s papers, and they criticized WAEC for failing to protect the integrity of the examination process. Students Feel CheatedSome candidates expressed concern that the leak gave undue advantage to those who accessed the questions in advance, placing honest students at a disadvantage. A number of them called for the exam to be rescheduled, describing the experience as stressful and demoralizing. Calls for ReformEducation stakeholders are now renewing calls for Computer-Based Testing (CBT) to replace traditional paper-based exams. Leaders of school associations argue that CBT could help eliminate leaks, miracle centres, and rogue platforms. The National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation to determine the extent of the breach before deciding on a resit. Meanwhile, education experts warn that the prolonged wait and chaotic conditions may lead to mass failure and long-term damage to students’ mental well-being.

Jun 01, 2025 -- (4 hours ago)The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has explained that the current water shortage affecting Abuja City Centre and surrounding satellite towns is due to ongoing rehabilitation at two of the four major water treatment plants serving the area. In a statement released on Sunday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike stated that water supply would be rationed over the next two weeks as a result of these upgrades. The Minister said that while two treatment plants remain operational, the other two have been temporarily shut down to allow for critical rehabilitation work. He appealed for residents’ understanding, assuring them that the repairs are intended to enhance water service delivery and will be completed within a fortnight. To reduce the impact of the shortage during the upcoming Sallah celebrations, Wike noted that the two shut-down plants will be temporarily reactivated to boost water supply for the festive period. Providing further context, Wike explained, “The FCT Water Board operates four treatment plants with a combined capacity of 30,000 cubic metres per hour, divided into Phases 1 through 4. Due to inefficiencies and reduced output, a rehabilitation contract was awarded to Messrs SCC Nigeria Limited.” He said significant progress has been made on Phases 1 and 2, where core electro-mechanical components—the main drivers of the treatment system—are being replaced and reinstalled. This has necessitated a full shutdown of those two plants, which are interconnected. While Phases 3 and 4 remain in operation, Wike acknowledged that they alone cannot meet the water demands of the entire FCT. He clarified that the shutdown is only partial, not total, as potable water continues to be produced from the remaining plants, though supply disruptions are expected. Wike assured residents that contractors are working diligently to expedite the process and finish ahead of schedule. In the meantime, he urged households to store sufficient water to meet their daily needs. “To cushion the effect of this temporary shortage, the Water Board has created a rationing timetable, alternating supply between Lines 1 and 2 in the distribution network,” he added. “Residents are advised to store enough water to cope during this period.”

Jun 01, 2025 -- (4 hours ago)On Saturday, a coalition of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) took to the streets of Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, to call for an end to rape and all forms of sexual abuse targeting women. The campaign, themed “We Condemn Rape and All Forms of Abuse,” was led by the Teen Girls Enlightenment Initiative (TGEI) and supported by around ten other NGOs, according to a statement released on Sunday. Key members of the coalition included the International Federation of Women Lawyers, Less Privileged Children Encouragement Initiative, DM Photography, Teen Boys Enlightenment Initiative, Pishon Initiative for the Less Privileged, Serve and Support Community Initiative, Balkeem Security Services Limited, and Ijebu Rewa, among others. The sensitization rally lasted about two and a half hours, starting from Ibadan Garage and progressing to Lagos Garage in Ijebu Ode. During the march, participants distributed numerous flyers and pamphlets to raise public awareness about the campaign’s message. To reach a broad audience, the information was communicated in five languages—English, Pidgin, Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa—using megaphones, highlighting the campaign’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. Dr. Adebusola Okedele, founder of TGEI, emphasized the rally’s goal to raise public consciousness, educate the community, and inspire collective action against the widespread issue of sexual violence. She stated, “This campaign seeks to unite the community and empower survivors of sexual violence by ensuring they receive adequate support from relevant bodies.” Dr. Okedele expressed gratitude to the partner NGOs and underscored the importance of continuous advocacy and strong community involvement in combating rape and sexual abuse. Beyond awareness, the campaign also provided a platform for collaboration among stakeholders, community members, and advocacy groups working together to eradicate sexual violence. She encouraged participants to share what they learned within their communities and to persist in advocating for justice and prevention. Mrs. Taiwo Olusesi, Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, delivered an educational talk highlighting the necessity of preserving evidence following sexual assault and the importance of promptly reporting such cases to the police. Mrs. Olusesi advised that victims should avoid bathing or changing clothes before reporting the assault to prevent contamination or loss of critical evidence.

Jun 01, 2025 -- (5 hours ago)A man attempted self-immolation on Sunday outside Algeria’s Ministry of Justice in Algiers, reportedly in protest against perceived judicial injustice, sources told AFP. A video of the incident has since circulated on social media. Identified as Faouzi Zegout from Frenda—a town located approximately 340 kilometers (210 miles) west of the capital—he allegedly poured petrol over himself near the ministry building before setting himself on fire, according to local media reports. Security personnel stationed at the ministry responded swiftly, managing to extinguish the flames. Zegout sustained only minor injuries and was taken to a burns treatment facility in Algiers. “Faouzi Zegout is at the Algiers burns hospital and is in stable condition,” reported local outlet Frenda News on Facebook, though it did not cite an official source. In a video filmed moments before the act by a companion who later fled the scene, Zegout—wearing a white shirt, black trousers, and a tie—explained his reasons. He accused a judge at the Frenda court of unfairly threatening him with a 10-year prison sentence. He said the legal threat stemmed from his involvement in organizing a fundraiser for medical expenses without prior authorization. His court verdict was expected the same day as the incident. Zegout stated that his desperate action aimed to draw the attention of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to what he described as an unjust legal process. Such acts of protest are rare in Algeria, in contrast to neighboring Tunisia, where self-immolation has been more frequent in political or social demonstrations.

Jun 01, 2025 -- (5 hours ago)The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has emphasized the vital role of prayer in sustaining Nigeria. Speaking during the church’s monthly Thanksgiving service and special prayers for security and paramilitary forces at the RCCG national headquarters in Ebute-Metta, Lagos, Adeboye said, “Some ask, ‘You’ve been praying and fasting — where is the result?’ I just laugh. If we hadn’t been praying, Nigeria would be in a much more terrible condition. So let’s not stop.” He further stated that RCCG operates under a divine shield — a supernatural protection that has preserved the church from disaster since its inception. “There is a God who governs the affairs of men,” Adeboye said. “If those praying were to stop for just one week, the impact would be frightening. So keep praying. God controls the hearts of kings.”Preaching on the topic "Shadow of the Almighty," he shared several testimonies illustrating the divine protection over RCCG. “I don’t preach denominations, but there’s something unique about RCCG. There’s a shield — invisible, yet undeniable — covering this church,” he said. He recalled a miraculous event in the United States where a devastating flood affected 14 of 15 houses in a neighborhood — with the only untouched building being one that hosted an RCCG house fellowship. “Every house was flooded except number eight, where a sign read, ‘House Fellowship of RCCG holds here,’” he noted. Adeboye also referenced a fire incident in March at Otedola Bridge, Lagos, where several buildings were destroyed — except one RCCG facility that remained standing. “The structures before and after it were consumed, but not the RCCG building. That’s not luck — it’s divine protection,” he affirmed, while the church media displayed images from the incident. He stressed that while God's protective presence might not always be visible, it is real and powerful for those who dwell in Him. “True security lies in God. Whether in times of peace or turmoil, the Almighty casts His shadow of protection over His people,” he said. Earlier in the service, Pastor Folu Adeboye led a heartfelt prayer session for the peace and progress of Nigeria and for national leaders. “Let’s ask God to show mercy to our president and grant him peace, so he may lead with ease,” she prayed. The Thanksgiving service also celebrated members of the nation’s security and paramilitary forces, reaffirming RCCG’s dedication to spiritual intercession for national peace and divine preservation.

We ordinarily would have refrained from responding to commentaries by individuals or groups seeking to achieve cheap popularity as regards the lawful actions of the Administrator in Rivers State. However, when such commentaries contain blatant misinformation and are disseminated on a platform with extensive national reach, we are compelled to set the record straight for the benefit of the public.During a recent appearance on ARISE TV's “The Morning Show”, Mr. Jake Epelle made misleading and inflamatory remarks regarding the appointment of Administrators for Local Government Areas in Rivers State. While attempting to mask his bias with faint praise-referring to the Administrator as a “gentleman”and a “well-trained officer”-Mr. Epelle proceeded to label the lawful administrative measures as “illegal." Even more reckless was his unfounded insinuation of “ethic cleansing,” a claim that is not only baseless but dangerously inflammatory.Ignorance of Supreme Court JudgementMr. Epelle's assertions conveniently ignore the landmark judgement of the Supreme Court in Suit No. SC/CV/1176/2024 (Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) & Nine Others), where the apex court unequivocally ruled that any local government election conducted in violation of the Electoral Act is “unconstitutional, null, and void."Given this clear judicial position, it is disingenious for anyone to suggest that Administrator's actions taken in strict compliance with the law-are illegal. We expect public commentators, especially those granted national platforms, to engage in informed discourse rather than peddle politically motivated falsehoods.A Call for Responsible JournalismWe are particularly disappointed that ARISE TV, through its anchor Dr. Reuben Abati-an experienced journalist, lawyer, and former presidential spokesperson-allowed such misinformation to go unchallenged. The media has a duty to uphold truth and balance. We must take to cognizance that responsible journalism embodies a commitment to fairness, fact, accountability and ethical decision-making to ensure an informed society that values accurate information and diverse perspective and not amplify sensationalism.Restoring Order in Rivers StateRivers State is navigating a delicate phase in its democratic journey. The Administrator and his team remain committed to restoring lawful governance in line with the mandate of Mr. President. Recent events including the demolition of the State House of Assembly complex, the irregular passage of appropriation bills, and other security threats demanded decisive intervention. Should the President, who swore an oath to protect lives, property, and Nigeria's territorial integrity, have stood idly by?Appeal for Peace and ResponsibilityThis is a time for sobriety, not reckless rhetoric. While the Constitution guarantees freedom of speech, it must be exercised with responsibility. We urge all stakeholders to prioritize peace and work collectively towards stabilizing Rivers State.SIGNEDTOBIAS OTIBARA TAMUNOBELEMACONVERNER, Rivers Progressive People's FrontPort Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria
